About the Place
Nestled on the waterfront of Champotón, in the heart of Campeche along the Golfo de México, El Timon offers an authentic and inviting glimpse into Mexican coastal cuisine. This charming restaurant combines the casual comfort of a seaside spot with the warmth of traditional hospitality, making it a memorable destination for both locals and travelers alike.
The highlight here is undoubtedly the fresh seafood. Whether it's the iconic cóctel de camarones that keeps regulars like Mike Beatty returning year after year, or the garlic shrimp and crispy fried fish praised by many, each dish carries the essence of the sea. While the kitchen may occasionally lean heavily on breading, as noted with the coco shrimp empanizado, the overall quality and flavors maintain a strong connection to Campeche's culinary roots.
Vegetarian options hold their own with dishes like the expertly cooked rice with plantains, demonstrating El Timon's attention to diverse palates. Starters delivered as complimentary surprises add a delightful, authentic touch—introducing guests to flavors off the beaten path, often revealing local ingredients and preparations new to many visitors.
Beyond the food, the atmosphere is enhanced by attentive, knowledgeable staff who not only serve but share insights into traditional Mexican dishes, enriching the dining experience. The music playlist, featuring classic artists such as Sting and David Bowie, provides a nostalgic and relaxed backdrop that complements the scenic water view perfectly.
While the drink selection may feel limited, the homemade limonada and refreshing aguas, like Jamaica, serve as excellent accompaniments to the meal. Price points range from moderate to slightly elevated, balanced by the quality and location of the restaurant right by the sea.
Despite minor flaws like some worn furniture, El Timon impresses with its spacious, clean interior and a vibe that is both laid-back and genuine. Overall, El Timon stands out as a must-visit culinary gem in Champotón, capturing the spirit of Campeche’s coastal gastronomy with warmth and flavor that invites a return visit.
“ I have been going to the state of Campeche annually for 25 years as a tourist and to visit friends. I always go to Champotón for a cóctel camarones. This was my first visit to El Timon and it will be my destination in the future. ”
“ We enjoyed our dinner, and the prices are reasonable especially when you take in account the location right at the waterfront. Our waiter was extremely friendly and he knew a lot about Mexican cuisine and traditional dishes. It was a pleasure talking to him. We got some starters from the house with some food we never tried before so that was a pleasant surprise. They make a great limonada as well, good balance between sweet and sour, with that little bite to it. ”
“ Looks good from the curb, the room is spacious and clean, the staff is friendly, unobtrusive and knowledgeable, and the kitchen falls a bit short: coco shrimp empanizado had too much bread and too little shrimp but the entradas we’re wonderful ”
“ Great food, but the selection of drinks was a bit limited. Cool spot right on the water. ”
“ Neat spot on the water. We enjoyed the garlic shrimp and fried fish. Veggies were excellent. They gave us plate of free starters or samples, I guess, that were tasty. The only downside is that the place has a bit of a rough feel due to worn out chairs and such. ”
